The works afford viewers a place to reflect, create and connect.
The Tapestry of Self: New York City captures the glamour and excitement of the Midtown East neighborhood of Manhattan. The grandeur of the Statue of Liberty and bold lines of the Chrysler building command the attention, while the legendary Radio City Music Hall, the iconic Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, and the bright lights of Times Square and Broadway dazzle. The #6 subway line and a yellow taxi exude the kinetic energy of the Big Apple, in perfect contrast to the soothing, green sanctuary of Central Park. And, of course, New York wouldn’t be New York without a slice of piping hot pizza or the perfect city bagel. Located in the hotel lobby.
Glass Science Suspended in Motion is a blue glass mobile above the elegant staircase. While the seemingly frantic hand-blow glass figures spark interest as they dangle overhead, the more enriching story is the artist, David Smith, who was introduced to the art of glass blowing in 1978 while studying for a degree at MIT. As a result of his love for glass science combined with an interest in the tradition and history of glass blowing, Smith followed his bliss and is now the owner and operator of Blowing Sands Glass in Seattle. Located between the lobby and second floor.
Poker Face Guardians are four sculptures guarding the hotel’s intimate lobby. This piece, “Four of a Kind,” was composed from recycled metal by Montserrat Daubon & Pedro Villalta, who resides in Harlem. The stoic figures represent the four suits in a deck of playing cards: clubs, hearts, spades and diamonds. Those with a penchant for cultural outings may want to visit the artistic duo’s outdoor sculpture, “Pod,” which is in Harlem at 124th Street and Lenox and funded by Kickstarter. Located in the hotel lobby.
Expressions of New York art pieces brings the city’s creative spirit indoors. From striking contemporary installations to intricate hand-crafted work, each piece reflects the movement, diversity, and energy that define New York City. Located on the second floor Club Room.
